The presence of HMI in the Northeast is vital for the hockey community here. For the players who attend our chapel programs, this is sometimes their only opportunity to learn the Word of God and have an outlet to share and hear of God's love. It is explained in a way that they can relate it to their life. Even for those players that do not attend chapel, HMI is a source of stability and comfort in a world that is often hectic and unsure. There are times when these young men need someone to listen; someone who will keep their confidences and just be there for them. It can take weeks, months, sometimes even years of investment by the team chaplain to gain the trust of a player that isn't sure who he can trust. In their world, most people want something from them and it can be hard to believe that their chaplain wants nothing but to share Good News.
HMI's Christian Hockey camps are also vital in the lives of young boys and girls. How amazing is it for these young people to learn at an early age, that it is not only ok to love God and play hockey, but it is the only way to play the game they love. And they are learning this from the professional players that they look up to. Without the presence of HMI in the Northeast, the pro players would not have this incredible outlet to share this amazing Truth to the kids that admire them. The players are able to point the kids to the only One worthy of admiration and worship. They are able to show through example that God comes first before hockey, but it is ok for Christians to play this exciting sport.
